Provision

We run play and creative sessions for children with a variety of needs including ADHD, Autism, learning difficulties; behavioural, emotional and social challenges, for example suffering with anxiety or struggling to manage other strong feelings. Where possible we work outdoors in natural environments which support calm.

Sometimes verbal communication is a difficult way for young people to express themselves and feelings clearly, this can lead to negative behaviour and acting out., especially for children who experience feelings and sensory stimuli intensely to the point of overwhelm.

We enable children to express themselves through a variety of non-verbal means, starting with felt experiences in the body such as rhythmic play, clapping, body tapping, copying sounds and movement; then projective art, painting, clay and moving onto free play with puppets and animal figures; exploring stories and character role-play. Based on the principles of Neuro Dramatic Play, these creative mediums echo the key developmental stages of children from birth to pre-teens. Engaging in these activities can help to meet needs missed at these stages as well as allowing them to process current emotions, experiences and relationships in their lives.

This can enable children to express themselves more clearly and freely. The facilitator gives their full attention to the child, observing and reflecting what they see the child do and feel. In this way they can feel validated and valued.

From here it can also be possible to reflect upon and discuss their experiences, feelings and behaviour, explore ways to help them manage feelings going forwards and to develop a positive vocabulary to express their feelings and needs.

"Neuro Dramatic Play® was coined and developed by innovative international arts practitioner Dr Sue Jennings. It is an attachment-based intervention... Through play and drama, it emphasises a combination of basic trust, security and ritual, with stimulation, exploration and risk. Ritual and risk form the basis of children feeling safe in the world.as well as a desire to explore it. Neuro Dramatic Play® enables people to become more playful and to think ‘outside the box’. It encourages people to be more independent and self-reliant. It affirms people’s identity and self-esteem, and the building of social relationships."

NDP for all ages!

NDP is inspired by key stages of early development, embodied experience: sound, movement, sensory activities; projective activities, art, making with clay or other hand crafting and role which can involve story telling, use of puppets or speaking as a character. These are key in early development but can be used with all ages therapeutically for well being, self reflection, improving communication, expressing and exploring feelings, finding aliveness, fun and joy. I combine NDP with Somatic Experiencing techniques in one to one adult sessions, see Somatic Expression.

For the Elderly:

The activities described above can also be used with elderly people to awaken their senses, bring them a sense of fun, playfulness and aliveness. With a group we might do simple lead and follow movements with arms or hands, play with making rhythm, use percussive instruments, explore colours on a page, sing or play with making sounds, make up stories, move pieces of fabric to music, share personal stories of memories, act them out... All depending on the level of physical ability and cognition of those present, we adapt the activities to a variety of need and ensure that everyone is included in some way.
